Fatty liver, or hepatic steatosis in other words, can occur for various reasons.

What Is Fatty Liver?

Fatty liver is a metabolic disorder in the liver cells, which results in their obesity.

Instead of processing fat, liver cells are changed and are filled with fat. They begin to swell and break. Fat droplets merge with each other and turn into fat ‘cysts’. The liver increases in size. Liver cells, loaded with too much fat, stop functioning. This leads to a disorder of metabolic processes and protective functions against the body toxins. During the last stage of fatty liver disease, there comes about a non curable disease called liver cirrhosis, which causes death.

Fats that are found in foods are broken down in the intestine and enter the bloodstream. The liver converts fats, which come from the bloodstream, into cholesterol, triglycerides, phospholipids, and others.

Triglycerides are the source of cell energy. Excess triglycerides are deposited in the fat build-up.

Phospholipids are the components of cell walls that give it flexibility and fluidity. They are found in nerve tissues. In addition, they transport fatty acids and cholesterol to the cells, dissolving it and preventing it from settling on the walls of blood vessels.

Fatty liver, or hepatic steatosis, can occur for various reasons.

1. Excessive use of alcohol impairs proper liver function. If alcohol consumption becomes less common, the disorder begins to disappear due to the compensatory abilities of a healthy body. If alcohol is consumed on a regular basis, the changes in the liver cells only become worse. Drug use also leads to fatty liver.

2. Another cause of fatty liver may be excessive consumption of fatty foods. ‘Excessive’ means the use of fats in greater amount than its required daily allowance (80-100g), as well as a diet rich in digestible carbohydrates and saturated fats plus obesity.

One more factor of malnutrition which causes fatty liver is the sudden reduction in body weight or fasting.

3. A cause of fatty liver may also be a large amount of fat in the blood, caused by inappropriate metabolism or disorder of the endocrine glands. The main factor that provokes any disorder is excess weight and diabetes.

4. Fatty liver can occur when taking certain medications too, such as anti-virus, NSAIDs or corticosteroids, etc.

5. One more reason for fatty liver can be the flow of harmful and toxic substances into the body.

6. Fat retention in the liver can occur if there is some reduction of substances, which are involved in fat processing. These are proteins and lipotropic substances. In this case, unprocessed fats are deposited in the liver.

Fatty liver occurs gradually without any discomfort. When the disease has already covered most of the liver, there is constant pain in the right upper hypochondrium, followed by nausea and vomiting. The defecation is broken. The person loses weight. The diagnosis of ‘fatty liver’ is made on the basis of medical research.

What is Needed to Prevent Fatty Liver?

The first step is to stop using alcohol and drugs. This will enable the liver to recover its health.

The other important step in preventing fatty liver is starting a healthy diet. It’s necessary to include foods that contain protein (100-120g/per day), but reduce the amount of animal fats.

The diet should consist of products that help restore the liver and contain lecithin, or a lipotropic substance: not fatty fish meat and cottage cheese, seafood, foods from soy flour, wheat bran, not refined vegetable oils, as well as artichokes, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, luminaria. As for baked goods, these should be products rich in lecithin.

When preparing food, no frying is required.

An active way of life can have a positive effect in the prevention of fatty liver as well; for example, walking and light sports.
